Digital India Internship Scheme

The Indian Government has launched a limited-period opportunity for students to earn up to ₹ 20,000/-. This has been done under the Digital India Internship Scheme. With this internship, students can ensure first-hand practical work experience under the supervision of a qualified and skilled Supervisor/Mentor.

Purpose of the Digital India Internship Scheme

An internship is an opportunity that is offered by an employer to potential employees to work for a fixed period of time. These potential employees are called interns. Interns are usually students or graduates who need practical working experience. It encompasses a professional learning experience that offers work that is meaningful and practical to a student’s field of study or interest or career. An internship gives the interns the opportunity for their career development and exploration. It also helps them develop new skills. Most of the time, internships last between a month to three. Internships can be either paid or voluntary.

 

 

An internship aims at active participation in the learning process through implementing practical knowledge obtained in the classrooms. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology is involved in electronic advancement through e-infrastructure creation to facilitate and promote

  • E-governance
  • Promotion of electronics hardware production and Information Technology & IT Enabled Services (IT-ITeS) Industry
  • Rendering Support for the creation of Innovation Infrastructure in emerging areas of technology
  • Providing support for the development of e-Skills and Knowledge network
  •  Securing India’s cyberspace

For the larger benefit of the student community and with a view to enriching the management and implementation of its various schemes and programs, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has decided to notify a few “Internship Guidelines”, to provide a framework for the engagement of interns for a short period.

Eligibility

Candidates who wish to be a part of the Digital India Internship Scheme, have to be eligible for the same. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has laid down a few internship guidelines for aspirants. The eligibility criteria states

  1. Applicant must be an Indian Student
  2. Secured at least 60% marks in the last appeared degree examination or certification examination and pursued B.E/ B.Tech, M.E/ M.Tech/ MCA/ DoEACC ‘B’ level from a recognized university

Just possessing the qualifications stated above shall not secure an internship in the Ministry. Aspirants who have exposure in the intended area of internship with a good educational background and possess higher qualifications will be given preference based on need.

Duration of the Internship

Digital India Internship would be offered once a year. The minimum duration of the internship is fixed at two months. This can be extended up to three months depending on the requirement of the Ministry, the performance of the candidate, and the willingness of the intern to spend time with the Ministry.

Place of Internship

The Ministry offers the Digital India Internship to candidates across India. They may be situated in any corner of the nation. The internship location will be New Delhi. Selected candidates will have to locate themselves in New Delhi.

Every batch of interns or individual interns will have a Technical or Scientific project mentor/ supervisor. They will be from the ministry. The internship does not guarantee employment or assurance of employment with the Ministry.

How to apply for the Digital India Internship Scheme

If you are eligible and interested in the Digital India Internship Scheme, follow the steps given below to apply for the same

Step 1: Visit meity.gov.in/schemes

Step 2: Click on Digital India Internship Scheme. Under this, select the application for the internship option

Step 3: Click on Login or Apply for Service

Step 4: Enter the details asked for like User Name, Password, and Captcha code. Click on submit

Step 5: Once you are logged in, find Apply for Services on the left menu. Click on it and then click View Services

Step 6: Click on Apply

Step 7: On the right top corner, you will find a detailed help document. Refer to it while applying

Prerequisites

The Ministry has also laid down a few prerequisites for applying for the internship scheme. Eligible and interested candidates need to apply online only on the web portal of NIC for the internship scheme. Aspirants must have, at the time of application:

  • Recommendation letter from forwarding or sponsoring institution where the candidate is enrolled currently
  • When marks of attempting degree are obtained in CGPA, a letter from the Institute stating the formula used for conversion in percentage is. For 1st year ME/M.Tech./MCA or DOEACC students, candidates will either/convert CGPA to percentage based on the formula specified in his/ her B.E./ B.Tech, Graduation degree. In case, no conversion formula is specified in degree, the candidate will multiply the CGPA by 9.5 and enter it into the corresponding field
  • Passport size photo
  • Signature in digital format (jpg, png)

The selection process for the Digital India Internship Scheme

The applicants will be shortlisted and then selected by the respective groups, divisions, or organizations for their respective fields. For selection, a personal or skype interview may be conducted if necessary. Candidates note, that no TA/ DA will be paid for attending the personal interview. The list of candidates selected for the Digital India Internship Scheme shall be displayed on the web portal.

Remuneration

A token of Rs. 10,000/- per month will be paid to an Intern. This will be subject to satisfactory performance, duly approved by the supervisor. This amount will be remunerated after the completion of the internship only on the submission of the report duly accepted by the ministry.

Certificate of Internship

Certificates will be provided by the Ministry to the Interns on the fulfillment of the internship and submission of the report duly countersigned and received by the Competent Authority.
