ESL

ESL, or English as a second language, classes are an effective method for teaching English to those who do not speak any English, may speak very little English, or who speak English somewhat fluently, but want to brush up on their skills. ESL classes are a great way to learn how to speak, read and write English for those who use English as a second language.

ESL teachers, ESL classes, and ESL lessons should focus on the core fundamentals of English language instruction which include: reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary. Reading is an essential aspect for one being able to complete projects and assignments in non- ESL classes as well as ESL classes. ESL teaching needs to incorporate classroom participation, enjoyable projects, and classroom assignments.

Teaching ESL is similar to teaching young English speaking students to first read and write. Although ESL students may have different emotional needs, the foundation of learning is the same. Some ideas for teaching reading to ESL students include: having students read instructions aloud, book reports, free reading time, deciphering vocabulary context clues, reading comprehension exercises, and dictionary use.

In addition, some effective projects for teaching writing to ESL students are: autobiographies, journaling, wordless picture books, essay questions, and requiring students to use complete sentences. Furthermore, ESL students must learn vocabulary to properly read, write and speak English. Therefore, using flashcards, having a word of the day, and crossword puzzles are fun ways to teach vocabulary.

Projects are a pleasurable way to involve students, get them working in teams, and are also a great opportunity for learning. Writing and presenting skits and plays can help students to explore their creativity while perfecting their English. Holiday, pizza, or other parties can help students to feel comfortable, supported and interact with other students. In addition, they are a great way to require students to speak English with other students who are also trying to learn. Buddy teams that match native languages can also help students to build self-esteem, and complete projects and assignments with a partner who speaks their native language.

ESL jobs are becoming more available as the influx of immigrants continues to rise. Therefore, if you are interested in becoming an ESL teacher, finding a job should be easier than that of a regular classroom teacher. Many schools have job openings posted only for ESL teachers as there is a low supply and high demand.

If you are not interested in joining a school run ESL program, there are many on-line sites that offer free ESL instruction and classes. These can be effective if one is disciplined and a fast learner. However, many students find that they need to be a in classroom in order to gain the most benefit.

English as a second language classes are a helpful and popular way to learn all aspects of the English language. In addition, teaching ESL is a rewarding and in demand field that helps others to achieve their goals.
